Dragonpit dragonrider residency custom
Fire & BloodThe Dragonpit dragonrider residency custom placed at least one dragonrider at the Dragonpit, keeping a rider close enough to help defend King's Landing in an emergency. Under Rhaenyra Targaryen, the duty fell to Addam Velaryon; as the war sharpened suspicions about dragonriders of bastard birth, that practical safeguard became entangled with questions of loyalty.
Purpose and Setting
The custom answered a specific defensive need: a dragonrider was to reside at the Dragonpit so that the city could call on a rider if danger arose. The pit stood beneath a great dome on the Hill of Rhaenys. Its forty large underground vaults formed a ring cut into the hill, with heavy iron doors opening inward toward the sands and outward toward the hillside. The arrangement housed dragons, but the residency practice also made the Dragonpit a point of readiness for the city’s defense.
The Duty Under Rhaenyra
Several dragons had laired in the Dragonpit before flying to battle: Caraxes, Vermithor, Silverwing, and Sheepstealer. Five remained there afterward: Joffrey Velaryon’s Tyraxes; Addam Velaryon’s pale grey Seasmoke; the young dragons Morghul and Shrykos; and Dreamfyre, associated with Helaena Targaryen. Morghul was bound to Princess Jaehaera Targaryen, who had fled, while Shrykos was bound to her twin, Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen, who was dead.
Rhaenyra preferred to keep her sons close to her, rather than have them take up the Dragonpit watch. The duty therefore fell to Addam Velaryon. His assignment shows the custom operating as a practical allocation of responsibility amid the demands of war: the pit needed a resident rider, and the queen chose a trusted member of her dragonriding forces to provide one.
Loyalty and Defensive Fragility
The arrangement became politically vulnerable after the dragonseeds Hugh Hammer and Ulf White defected to the enemy. At the black council, their betrayal prompted questions about whether Addam and Nettles, who were also of bastard birth, could be trusted. Bartimos Celtigar urged that both be seized before they could take their dragons to the opposing side; other council members likewise warned against risking two more dragons. The debate turned Addam’s assigned service into a test of confidence in the very rider expected to help protect the city.
The danger facing the Dragonpit soon extended beyond doubts within the council. After the Shepherd incited a crowd to attack the dragons, thousands moved through King's Landing toward the Hill of Rhaenys, their numbers swelling on the way. Rhaenyra sent riders to disperse the crowd, seize the Shepherd, and defend the royal dragons, though the turmoil made it uncertain whether her orders could be carried out and the remaining loyal gold cloaks were too few to ensure success. The episode exposed the limits of relying on a resident dragonrider: the custom kept a defender at the pit, but it could not by itself secure the site against a citywide uprising.
